December News and Updates
CERT Training
This December, United Rescue Alliance hosted another successful CERT training for 17 community members!
During this training, URA team members taught students about topics like fire safety, light search and rescue, disaster psychology, household disaster prep and more! The skills that students learn during CERT trainings can save lives during crisis and every day life.
The URA team highly values every opportunity to teach the Abilene and Big Country community about what they can do to help their neighbors and their families in times of disaster and crisis.
URA wants YOU be the next CERT member! Be sure to watch our website and upcoming newsletters for information about the next CERT training.
URA Guatemala
Olga Macolas is a single mother of 2 children under 4 living in an impoverished town of Guatemala. Like many people in the area, Olga has very little education and was working in the pineapple fields doing manual labor until a terrible accident at work that permanently injured her hand. Olga is doing her best to provide for her children doing odd jobs and whatever work she can find.
Olga and her children were living in a home made out of rusted sheet metal with dirt floors. Thanks to lots of hard work and generous donations, URA Guatemala was able to partner with The Moore Center to build Olga and her children a new home! This new home will keep them safe from the weather and give her children a place to grow and thrive.
URA Guatemala is so grateful to its partners at The Moore Center and The Shalom Foundation for their heart and generosity!
Tel Aviv Internship
URA’s intern, Amit Marshal, is nearing the end of Phase 1 of his internship. Phase 1 has included several weeks of teaching on topics like whole community concepts, URA’s MESSH framework, and disaster case management. To round out his knowledge, the team invited Dr. Brenda Jones to speak to Amit about public health as it relates to disaster case management. Dr. Jones shared about the importance of keeping public health at the forefront of case management responses to ensure the health and safety of disaster survivors and clients.
The team would like to say thank you to Dr. Jones for sharing her time and knowledge with our intern!
